The Railroad Cat In Nevada Constantly Appears To Be In Need Of A Bath

Ely, Nevada has a population of around 4,000 people. The community is situated on the United States’ loneliest route, which stretches for about 200 miles in all directions.

The kitty seemed to have spent a long day working on the train.

Eric Mencis, the railway’s manager of guest services and social media director, told Bored Panda:

“As the tours advance around the facility, visitors are shocked to learn of the railroad’s history. Then, as if sensing his cue to arrive, Dirt enters the room where the tour is taking place, or emerges from beneath one of the trains, and sits in the midst of the group with a pride that only he can have …

Dirt was born there 11 years ago, and his mother, a stray cat, gave birth to him under one of the trains and a 1907 rotary snow plow (a huge steam engine). This is the cat’s sole known residence.

Dirt was terrified to leave the house because his mother and brothers had already departed.

Eric explains:

«Mom and the other kittens had gone, leaving this lovely cat alone, but he was scared to venture out. So every night, our rail personnel put a can of tuna on a chair for this kitten. Finally, the cat became acquainted with the other members of the team.

Because the cat likes wandering and rolling on the powerhouse’s dirt floors and frequently climbs the coal trees of the steam train, everyone decided to call him “Dirt.”

Eric stated:

“The cat’s coat pattern is originally white and orange, but its white hair goes gray because it began rolling on the ground and climbing trains at a young age.”

People love the route and history of the railroad, but the railroad cat attracts a lot of attention and frequently acts like a celebrity; he is photographed, he goes among the tour participants, and he lets them pet him.

The journey, which lasts around an hour, is accompanied by dirt, which is not as hard as it appears.

Although Dirt is the lone pet, he did have some orange and white babies at one point, and they got dirty exactly like him, but they were adopted by the same staff.

According to Eric Mencis, Dirt’s rise to fame was unintentional, as a result of some photographs he shared on social media a few years ago. People became aware of him, and he decided to shoot the cat again with the assistance of a local volunteer, Steve Crise, a professional photographer.

They’ve been a huge hit, especially when combined with the cat’s tough demeanor, and they’ve been accompanied with messages.

It’s incredible how well-known Dirt is, adds Eric:

“I’m astonished he’s gotten well-known. I expected it to be popular, but not that popular. We sell t-shirts, magnets, key chains, coffee cups, and even your own coffee, and we’ve transported your products all over the world to customers who purchased them through our website. “Knowing how much joy Dirt provides to individuals all throughout the world is the greatest thrill of his celebrity.”

Approximately 30,000 people visit the museum each year, with some of them being die-hard Dirt fans. Despite its dusty look, it is incredibly attractive, and they now organize a ‘Dirt The Cat Photo Contest’ every February.

They allow 30 photographers to snap shots on the trains. Eric thinks a steam locomotive in the snow is a photographer’s dream, and they have two of them.

Eric continued:

“I informed the photographers that whoever got the greatest image of Dirt on the weekends may win several cups of coffee and Dirt Coffee as a fun thing to do. So they had a good time, and I got a lot of beautiful pictures.

Eric gives some advise for guests who wish to meet Dirt in the future; he frequently appears unexpectedly, so being prepared is a good start. Hearing voices is also intriguing, and you should let him approach first, allowing him to rub himself and gain confidence so you can softly caress him.

Built-in the early 1900s, the Northern Nevada Railroad Museum is a significant landmark. Dirt likes taking people on a journey via his fantastic narrative.
