Caged Dog Was Found Floating In Frozen Lake Where She Was Stuck

Bryant Fritz spotted a dog stuck on a tree limb inside a cage floating in Lake Kaufman near Chicago, Illinois (USA). Bryant noticed the confined dog after hearing moaning.

He said:

“I set down my fishing rods and tackle box, glanced around, and saw no one.” I could see she noticed me and didn’t want me to leave her searching for assistance or waiting. So I walked inside after removing three layers of sweaters and my pants. The water was over my waist, and I’m 6’5′′.

Bryant noticed “blood on the pavement” after emerging from the water with the dog and cage in hand, and the dog was “losing hair everywhere.”

Bryant explained:

“He was covered with sores and the flesh on his legs was missing.”

According to Susan Hillard on GoFundMe, the man carried the puppy to his truck and went “so fast” that he couldn’t recall it.

According to CNN, Bryant claimed that when he returned home, the puppy they called “Dory” couldn’t stand and was trembling a lot, so he covered her in a dry wool blanket and carried her to the University of Illinois Veterinary Clinic, where he told them that if the pup lived, he wanted to give her a loving home.

Bryant explained:

“I called two hours later, terrified, but he was OK. Her body temperature was so low that it went unnoticed at first. Her cage was coated in dried excrement that they couldn’t wash off despite spending hours in the water. This is something I believe everyone should be aware of. She was in excruciating pain prior to being tossed into the lake.”

Dory was healthy enough to be brought to Champaign County Animal Control, which would “care for her until the police investigation is complete,” according to the clinic’s Facebook post.

The dog’s GoFundMe fundraising effort has already raised $7,000 in only four days.

On GoFundMe, Susan wrote:

“I’d want to express my gratitude to the University of Illinois Veterinary Program for everything they’ve done and continue to do for this wonderful little dog.” We are really lucky to have this center’s access to world-class care. I’m sure she’ll require more medical attention in the future, and Bryant intends to use these monies to pay for it.”
